In 1260, Nicolo and Maffeo Polo set forth on their first journey to the East. After traveling from the East to the land of the Tartar they reached the Kublai Khan court. The Khan questioned them about the Catholic faith and asked them to return to Europe and request the pope to send missionaries. However, when the two explorers returned they learned that Pope Clement was dead. After that discovery they also revealed Nicolo’s wife had died while giving birth to a son, who is now in his teenage years. After the passing of the Pope there was a long delay in naming a new one. In 1271, Marco Polo set forth navigating across exotic lands with his father and uncle on a journey that lasted several years. Marco Polo discovered trade and religion that has brought the world together today. The beginning of their journey led to them being accepted into the Kublai Khan Court. This journey took place across deserts, mountains, and seas in East Asia, continuing along the Silk Road, and through regions that were unknown to the Western World. Also, they had many encounters with creatures, plants, and humans from different cultures. Through acceptance and service, Marco Polo was led to places far away that were rich of gems, gold, and silk. Yet, when participating in a military conflict in 1298 he was taken captive.
