After moving into her new apartment with her newly wedded husband, Dana is unexpectedly pulled back in time to finds herself in 1800, Maryland where she sees Rufus drowning in a river. After rescuing the young white boy, she is then terrified by the father of the boy, threating to take her life, which literally scares her back to the future. She finds Rufus watching his curtains. Dana quickly puts out the fire, talks to Rufus about it, and escapes from the house before Weylin, Rufus’s father, finds her. Dana goes to Alice’s house because she believes that she is an ancestor. Before she was able to arrive at the cabin, a group of white men break down the door whips Alice’s and beat him. They also beat Alice’s mother. After the men leave, Dana comes out from where she was hiding and helps out. When Dana leaves, a white man finds her, beats her, and attempts to rape her†¦ Following with another dizzying effect, where she is returned home to her own time†¦ Thirty minutes later of course. The next time Dana time travels, Kevin comes with. Back at the plantation, Rufus has broken his leg. Rufus refuses to let Dana leave, so everyone returns to the house together. Kevin and Dana stay on the plantation for a while, But when Dana gets caught teaching Nigel to read, Weylin whips her. Dana receives the â€Å"oh so familiar† dizziness and is returned to her normal timeline†¦ without Kevin. After about a week of Dana impatiently waiting and preparing for another infamous dizzying, time travel, extravaganza, she is transported back to 1820 in a forest not far from the plantation. Rufus had gotten into a fight with Isaac, Alice’s newly wedded husband, because he had raped her and wants her all to himself. Dana tells Isaac to leave Rufus alone and run away with Alice. Alice and Isaac are caught. After Rufus doesn’t mail her letters to Kevin, who has gone way up north, she tries and fails to escape the plantation, she is punished for her â€Å"crimes† and â€Å"earns† a whipping. Kevin shows up, and they both escape, were they escape a near death by time traveling back to the future. When Dana time travels back to the plantation, she learns that Rufus has sold Alice’s children. Alice soon after kills herself. Rufus attempts to commit suicide as a result. A few days following the â€Å"incident† Rufus confesses his â€Å"love† for her. She leaves planning to cut her wrists in order to get home, but Rufus follows her and attempts to rape her. Dana stabs him twice with her knife, killing him. She returns home immediately. Her arm is severed and crushed in the spot where Rufus was holding it. Some are different shapes and sizes; others maintain a narrow minded perspective. There are many things that differentiate human beings from one other, but Jordan Baker stands out the most. She a major character throughout the novel, and contributes to the story in the highest degree. She embodies the shallowness and arrogance of people during the 1920’s. In F. Scott Fitzgerald’s novel, The Great Gatsby, Jordan Baker portrays her showy and arrogant attitude through several incidents, and gives the reader a visual of the life of people during the 1920’s. Fitzgerald uses every tool at his disposal to bring the character of Jordan to life, and to show her flamboyant and arrogant personality. He uses certain words and literary phrases that give the reader a true visual of what Jordan is like in the novel. Fitzgerald uses several sophisticated words in this passage that enhance the visual it gives to the reader. Jordan again shows her arrogant attitude by refusing a cocktail from Daisy because she is â€Å"absolutely in training† (10). Her arrogance is again showed when talking to Nick, â€Å"you live in West Egg,’ she said contemptuously†, this passage is worded the way it is to show Jordan’s view upon Nick’s living arrangements, which are obviously frowned upon (11). Further into the novel, readers will begin to see Jordan’s opinion of herself and how conceited she truly is. While attending one of Gatsby’s many lavish parties, she states she enjoys larger parties much more than smaller parties, because of the large parties’ ability to hold intimacy, in a way that smaller parties cannot. This represents irony because in reality the smaller parties would be the ones where you would find the greatest amount of intimacy. Fitzgerald takes advantage of whenever Jordan Baker is speaking to show her personality and character, thus greatly developing the character throughout the novel. Actions speak louder than words, and define people for who they are, and Jordan Baker understands this to perfection. Jordan deeply takes pleasure in being public and seen by other people, which can be proven time and time again during the many lavish parties. Jordan and Daisy, while lazily chatting at Tom’s house, are wearing extravagant white dresses, which can also prove her need to be seen by others. Then while attending Gatsby’s first of many extravagant parties, Jordan is seen in a whole new light. â€Å"Leaning a little backward and looking with contemptuous interest down at the garden† (42). This proves the point brought forth that implies Jordan being arrogant, and that she thinks too highly of herself. Her physique is that of a stuck up lady who envisions herself a goddess in mortal form. She thrives off attention from others, especially from other men. Jordan has a sensational knack for not telling the truth, especially in the incident involving her cheating at a gold tournament. Being a well-known woman golfer, Jordan received a generous amount of publicity from the media, especially when â€Å"she had moved her ball from a bad lie in the semi-final round† of the tournament (57). She is a fundamental liar who resources to lying and cheating to get her way, something not particularly uncommon for women for this day and age. Jordan Baker’s actions label her character in more ways than one in the novel, and indefinitely define her personality. Nick, the leading protagonist in the novel, views Jordan’s ways of life and personality in many different lights. In the beginning of the book, he views her as a cool woman with much underneath the surface. He begins to admire her for her athleticism, her looks, and her personality, which Nick learns is not the personality for him. Towards the end of the book, Nick is confronted by Jordan after they had broken up and she tells him that she is engaged with another man, which Nick doubts. He doubts this because of Jordan’s ability to toy with the feelings of others, especially other single men. She plays with the feelings of men, while having no intention of getting involved in a relationship. This is confirmed when Nick sees her and describes her as having â€Å"her chin raised a little jauntily†, which again symbolizes her arrogance (177). Nick views her as a self centered person ith a peculiar sense about her, for example when he first sees her wearing a white dress indoors for what seemed like a long time. Finally, Nick finds the errors of his ways and breaks it off with Jordan, ending the damaging toll the relationship had upon Nick’s mental well being. Nick does not recognize her arrogant personality, something he can’t handle, nor does he want to attempt to handle. Early in the story Nick is captured and somewhat intimidated by Jordan but as he begins to understand her true personality, he sees how different she actually is. Jordan’s ostentatious and arrogant personality reflects the life of women during the 1920’s. She is the type of woman, who enjoys being looked at and admired by others, the type of woman whose personality draws all the attention in a room, and a woman whose conceitedness is unmatched by anyone. She is a unique person, a person who continues to impress the people around her. Jordan Baker is a very special woman because of her ability to draw the reader in, desperately searching for more of her intriguing character.

HOW TO WRITE A THESIS STATEMENT When grading the work, the quality of the implementation and formulation is as important as independent work in narrowing down the subject, literature research, and finding the solution. Used results out of the literature have to be marked thoroughly to separate them from the own work. Programming language expressions like if a=b then s1 must be separated from common speech and other notations (like mathematical expressions) to avoid misunderstanding. 10 Classes of Careless Usage 10 Classes of Careless Usage 10 Classes of Careless Usage By Mark Nichol If you find yourself making any of the following types of errors, general or specific, brush up on your writing with grammar guides and usage handbooks and/or any or all of the other strategies mentioned at the end of this post. 1. Appending an s to words in which, in most usage, the letter should not be included (for example, regards, as in â€Å"in regards to†) or that, in American English, have dropped it altogether (backward). (Using the -st ending in such words as amidst and amongst is a similar sign of poor usage.) 2. Using the incorrect form of pronouns writing, for example, â€Å"My friend and myself† instead of â€Å"My friend and I† or â€Å"That happened to she and I at the same time† rather than â€Å"That happened to her and me at the same time.† (If you don’t like the way that sentence looks, either, write, â€Å"That happened to both of us at the same time.†) 3. Using unnecessarily complicated words or phrases in favor of simpler, well-established terms: utilize instead of use, â€Å"prior to† in place of before, subsequently instead of later. 4. Using nonwords: irregardless, supposably, theirselves. 5. Using plural forms of words instead of singular ones: â€Å"a criteria,† â€Å"a phenomena.† 6. Using less when fewer is appropriate: â€Å"There are less boxes than I thought† instead of â€Å"There are fewer boxes than I thought.† 7. Using euphemisms: â€Å"He passed away last year† instead of â€Å"He died last year.† 8. Using badly in place of bad in such sentences as â€Å"He feels badly about the decision.† 9. Adding extraneous prepositions: â€Å"That’s too small of a shirt for you.† 10. Employing erroneous wording of idiomatic phrases: â€Å"for all intensive purposes† instead of â€Å"for all intents and purposes.† So, how do you know if you’re making such mistakes? Printing this representative list out and tacking it up next to your computer is all well and good for reminding you about these ten pitfalls, but what about the hundreds of others that plague writers? A combination of strategies is called for: Do Your Homework Borrow or buy some of the books listed in the post I linked to in the first paragraph, or check out the resources reviewed on this site. You needn’t read these guides cover to cover; just browse each one to determine whether its content or presentation style is appropriate for you, then, a few pages at a time, work your way through the ones that work for you. Read Role Models Seek out high-quality prose: leading magazines and newspapers and great literature. You don’t have to give up reading your favorite blogs or pulp fiction (some of which is/are very well written), but divide your leisure reading between the exemplary and the acceptable so that you can distinguish between the two and recognize well-constructed prose. Go Back to School Take a writing or editing class, whether offered as part of a university’s regular curriculum or as a continuing-education course. Whether you earned an MA in literature is irrelevant. You probably didn’t focus on the mechanics of writing during your college years, but now it’s time to do so. Ask for Backup Get a friend or a colleague whose writing or editing skills you respect to look over shorter pieces for you and flag grammar and usage errors. (Emphasize that you’d like them to merely call out the problems; you’ll solve them.) This strategy doesn’t work if you’ve completed a novel or a thick report, unless you can pay or trade for services, but when applied to short stories or modest work projects, it will help you develop your skills. When Rachel Southsea first headed the company, she introduced a range of organizational changes at all company levels. These changes proved to be not just simple structural reorganizations, but affected employees' attitudes and expectations, also their behaviour and dedication to the work processes. In other words, these novelties caused dramatic cultural changes and influenced the state of the psychological contract within the company. The psychological contract at Southsea plc, as defined by Schein (1978) represents "a set of unwritten reciprocal expectations between a single employee and the organization" (cited by Guest, 2003, p. 10). By the time Rachel Southsea headed the company, employees and even senior managers had an established positive psychological contract with clear expectations, presumably high degree of subjective employment security, and organizational commitment (Guest, 2003) within the "conservative structure" of an engineering company. Introducing new working approaches, such as relaxation of organizational controls caused confusion and irritation among senior managers, who felt that their expectations for their future within the company were no longer to be delivered (Guest, 2003). Release of control also influenced employees in that they felt insecure in the changing organizational environment, and exercised the freedom of not obeying to strict rules. Kurt Lewin, and later on Edgar Schein (1995, cited by Wirth R. 2004) defined this early stage of organizational change as "unfreezing", meaning removing old structures and cultural influences. As Schein ascertains, culture is deeply seated in people's minds (cited by Jossey-Bass, 1992) and change at Southsea Engineering plc was a difficult and time-consuming process. Senior management had to fight anxieties about the uncertain future. The duration and the intrusiveness of these changes made it difficult for employees to accept them and to adapt.
